In the spring of 1543, a revolutionary manuscript arrived at the printing house in Nuremberg, bound for the press that would transform humanity's understanding of its place in the cosmos. Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer and canon, had spent decades developing his heliocentric theory-a radical proposition that the Sun, not the Earth, occupied the centre of the heavens. His *De revolutionibus orbium coelestium*, or *On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres*, represented the culmination of a lifetime's careful observation and mathematical reasoning, challenging the geocentric system of Ptolemy that had reigned unchallenged for over thirteen centuries.
The book itself was a marvel of Renaissance scholarship: densely mathematical, methodically reasoned, and illustrated with diagrams that mapped a Sun-centred solar system.
