In the autumn of 1991, within the hushed corridors of CERN near Geneva, a British physicist named Tim Berners-Lee made a quiet gesture that would reshape human civilization. He released the source code of the World Wide Web to the world, asking nothing in return-no patents, no licensing fees, no corporate gatekeeping. This act of generosity emerged from necessity; Berners-Lee had invented the web three years earlier as an elegant solution to a frustrating problem: how could thousands of scientists across different institutions share their research more fluidly?
