Sallie Ann Jarrett
“She stood guard over the fallen, asking nothing but to serve those she loved.”

Sallie Ann Jarrett was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who found her purpose amid the horrors of the American Civil War. Adopted by the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1861, she marched with the regiment through countless battles, her small frame moving between tents and trenches. She became more than a mascot, a living reminder that loyalty and courage knew no bounds, even in the darkest hours of conflict.

At Gettysburg in July 1863, Sallie demonstrated the fierce devotion that made soldiers cherish her. When the regiment came under fire, she refused to abandon the wounded and fallen, staying close to the soldiers even as chaos erupted around them. Witnesses described her standing guard over the casualties, a small guardian whose presence seemed to offer comfort when nothing else could. Soldiers saw in her a purity of purpose that transcended the war's brutality.

Sallie served until 1865, and her memory endured far beyond the Civil War's end. The 11th Pennsylvania honored her legacy, and she remains commemorated in regimental histories and Civil War remembrances. Her story has been retold countless times, a testament to the bonds formed between soldiers and animals in times of great trial. Sallie Ann Jarrett stands as an emblem of steadfast devotion.
