Lucca
2004 to 2018 · United States
“She gave her leg and her service to those she loved without hesitation.”
Lucca was a German Shorthaired Pointer who served with the United States Marine Corps as a military working dog, completing over 400 patrols across Iraq and Afghanistan. Her nose was legendary among her unit, credited with detecting countless improvised explosive devices that might have taken lives. She moved through dangerous terrain with the focus and courage of any Marine, her handlers depending on her expertise as much as she depended on them. For six years, Lucca was a guardian and a soldier, asked to do the impossible and delivering it day after day.
The moment that defined Lucca came during a patrol in Helmand Province when her unit was ambushed. Without hesitation, she shielded her handler from an explosion, absorbing shrapnel that cost her her front left leg. She had already given so much; in that instant, she gave more. Her actions reflected the bond between soldier and working dog, a partnership built on trust and mutual protection. Lucca was evacuated and received a medal, becoming the first Marine working dog to be awarded the Purple Heart.
After her injury, Lucca retired to California with her handler, where she lived surrounded by the family who had known her as both warrior and beloved companion. Her story was shared widely, inspiring people to understand the true cost of military service and the sacrifices made by animals who cannot choose their duty. She remains a symbol of courage without complaint, of a life fully given to those she served beside.
