Kabang
2008 to 2021 · Philippines
“She had nothing but gave everything, a street dog's immortal gift.”
Kabang was a mixed breed street dog living in Quezon City, Philippines with no owner and no secure home. In 2009, when a motorcycle ridden by a man and a young girl sped dangerously toward two children standing in the street, Kabang threw herself in front of the vehicle. Her body absorbed the impact that would have killed or gravely injured the children, and she lay in the road with severe injuries. The community that surrounded her, moved by her selfless act, rallied to save her life, raising funds for emergency surgery and her recovery.
What bound Kabang to those children was the most basic and noble impulse, the protective instinct of a creature who had perhaps never been protected herself. A dog without a home or status in society recognized a moment of danger and responded with her own body, asking nothing in return. Her split-second decision revealed a capacity for sacrifice that transcended species and circumstance, a willingness to risk everything for strangers.
Kabang recovered from her injuries and became an international symbol of animal heroism and compassion. She was honored by animal welfare organizations worldwide and traveled to the United States for appearance at animal rights events. When she died in 2021, tributes poured in from around the world, and her story was told and retold as an example of love without boundaries. Today she is remembered as a hero, proof that greatness can emerge from the most humble and unlikely places.
