Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
Born in the Netherlands, Van Gogh struggled with mental illness throughout his life and was largely unsuccessful during his lifetime. He sold only one painting before his death. His work is characterized by bold colors, dramatic brushwork, and emotional honesty. Famous works include "The Starry Night," "Sunflowers," "Café Terrace at Night," and numerous self-portraits.
Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo provide insight into his artistic vision and personal struggles. Despite his poverty and mental health challenges, he remained dedicated to his art. He died at age 37 from a gunshot wound, which is believed to have been self-inflicted. Today, his paintings are among the most expensive ever sold, and his influence on modern art is immeasurable.
