Known for: The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, history's greatest comeback
“Sometimes you've got to let everything go, purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything, whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it.”
Biography
Anna Mae Bullock from Nutbush, Tennessee, survived a brutal marriage and walked out with nothing but her name, then, in her mid-forties, when the industry said she was finished, delivered Private Dancer and the biggest comeback in music history. What's Love Got to Do with It made her, at 44, the oldest female solo artist to top the Hot 100.
She filled stadiums into her sixties, 180,000 people in Rio, a Guinness record, with those legs, that rasp, and a joy that read as victory because it was. Twelve Grammys, two Rock Hall inductions, and a Broadway musical of her life. She died a Swiss citizen on Lake Zurich, at peace, having proved that the second act can dwarf the first.
