Biography
Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar emerged from humble circumstances in Erode, India, to become one of mathematics' most extraordinary natural talents. Born in 1887, he possessed an almost mystical intuition for numbers, teaching himself advanced mathematics from books with a determination that defied his family's limited means. Working as a clerk in Madras, he filled notebooks with thousands of original formulas and theorems, many of striking originality and beauty. His talent caught the eye of Indian mathematicians who recognized genius burning beneath his modest exterior, leading to correspondence with the Cambridge mathematician Godfrey Hardy in 1913, a connection that would change both their lives.
Hardy brought Ramanujan to Cambridge despite the challenges of crossing oceans and cultures during World War I. In their remarkable collaboration, Ramanujan produced groundbreaking work in mathematical analysis, number theory, and infinite series, solving problems that had long puzzled the mathematical world. His contributions to continued fractions and partition theory remain foundational to modern mathematics. Tragically, illness and the English climate weakened his health, and he returned to India in 1919, dying at just thirty-two. Though his life was brief, Ramanujan's legacy endures as a testament to the universality of mathematical genius and the power of passionate self-education.
