Biography

Confucius, born Kong Qiu, was a Chinese philosopher and politician of the Spring and Autumn period who is traditionally considered the paragon of Chinese sages. His philosophy, known as Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity. Born into a family of minor nobility in the state of Lu (modern-day Shandong Province), Confucius experienced poverty in his youth after his father's death. He worked various jobs, including as a shepherd and bookkeeper, while pursuing his education. Confucius became a teacher in his thirties, attracting a group of disciples who would later compile his teachings into the "Analects" (Lunyu). His educational philosophy was revolutionary for its time: he believed that education should be available to all, regardless of social class, and that moral character was more important than noble birth. Confucius spent many years traveling through various Chinese states, seeking a ruler who would implement his political and moral ideas. Although he never found such a patron during his lifetime, his teachings profoundly influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese thought and life. Confucianism emphasizes five key relationships (ruler-subject, father-son, husband-wife, elder brother-younger brother, friend-friend) and virtues such as ren (benevolence), yi (righteousness), li (proper conduct), zhi (wisdom), and xin (integrity). His concept of the "junzi" (gentleman or superior person) - someone who cultivates virtue and acts morally - became an ideal in Chinese culture. Confucius died at age 72, disappointed that his ideas had not been implemented during his lifetime. However, his teachings were later adopted as the official ideology of the Han Dynasty and remained the foundation of Chinese education and government for over two millennia. Today, Confucius is revered as one of the greatest teachers and philosophers in human history, and his ideas continue to influence East Asian societies and increasingly, the world.
