Anthony Bourdain

Known for: Chef and storyteller who taught the world to travel with an open heart

“Your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”

Biography

A line cook who became a bestselling author at 43 with Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain then reinvented travel television by treating food as the doorway to human beings. He ate street noodles with strangers and shared meals in war zones and slums, insisting that the real story was always the people at the table.

He was curious, profane, endlessly humane, as comfortable with a president as with a fisherman, and more interested in the fisherman. When he died by suicide at 61, the outpouring revealed how many strangers he had made feel less alone. His gospel endures in every traveller who sits down, shuts up, and listens to someone else's life over a shared plate.
